Pinch Pot Puppies

  2nd grade made these adorable Puppy Pinch Pots. This was a 2 Day project. 1 Day to glaze

Day 1: students learned how to make a pinch pot.

Day 2. students used slab building to create a puppy face lid. To start each student was given 1 large slab of clay. They gently flipped their dry pinch pot over and traced around the lip. Then they cut out the form.

Using water they smoothed out the edges.  Using the left over clay, I showed students how to create the muzzle and eyes for their puppy by forming spheres and flattening them. Then they used  tooth brushes to score and slip each form in place. Last students  create and attach the ears to the back of the lid.  

Old pencils worked great to crave in details like the mouth. Old markers helped to stamp eyes. I think they turned out pretty cute!

I always allow the ceramic work to sit out for a week or 2 to get very bone dry before firing. 

Usually most, if not all, work survive the kiln. Students get so attached to their ceramic work.

Classes used the glaze that was available at the time. We had Crystal magic and few colors of Mayco Stroke & Coat Glaze.  Students had fun mixing the few colors of glaze we had to create new colors for the muzzle, nose, eyes etc. 

They could not wait to take their work home.
