This School year we wanted to start off super Positive and BE THE LIGHT!
So what better then to create a Positive Sun Collage with a a beautiful message!
Before Starting the lesson, students talked about positive words. Students were introduced to the concept of creating Rhythm in art. They watched a great short Art Quest video about how Rhythm in Art is created through movement and pattern.
Students then reviewed how Colors are mixed to create Tints and Shades to help create Value.
After class discussion, 3rd grade got straight to work!
Day 1 - Using their hand as a reference for scale, students placed their hand in the center of the pre cut poster (horizontal). Students drew a large curve around their hand. Focusing on Value and Rhythm, they painted a beautiful sky. They followed the curve and had great rhythm that showed a value pattern with movement.
Next students used a double loaded brush dipped in red and yellow acrylic to paint their sun. They tried their best to have all 3 hot colors showing!
Day 2: Students Collaged their rays using fun pattern paper. I showed students how to fold the strips off the edge of their posters and to cut on the fold.
We talked about how the Rays should touch the semi circle of the sun and not go inside.
Then they formed a word with Pre Cut Poster Letters. These amazing peel and stick black letters can be found at your local Dollar Tree or Dollar General. Super easy! The students had a blast thinking of a positive word and trying to spell out their word correctly. Even though, the letters are pre stick, students made sure to GLUE them on!
Once they found their word. They Glued the letters down Vertically.
Day 3: Students used acrylic paint pens to jazz up the sun's rays, the sky, and black letters using patterns, polka dots, and even spirals.

Once these beauties were dry, students mod podge them for a shiny look!
They really came out amazing! I can not wait to show off some more of these beauties!
Everyone was super successful and excited about this project!

12x 18 Cut Poster Board or Heavy Weight Mix Media Paper
Acrylic Paint
Pattern Paper or Scrap Paper
Glue/ Scissors
Paint Pens
Mod Podge (Optional)
