Zentangle Birds

Birds! Birds! Birds!

4th - 5th grade students created beautiful tropical zentangle birds.

They have been learning to draw from photo. I coach students to look at size, shape, and placement as they draw. Look draw, look draw, look draw!  Break down the photo into shapes and lines.

What type of line do you see? What does the shape look like? Where is the shape? Is it high? Low? In the middle?

Students draw the birds then outline using black glue (Black acrylic paint mixed with Elmers).  Once dry, they watercolored their birds.

Students had artistic freedom to choose where to place zentangles. Delightful results!

Inspired Amante Bark Painting Designs

 Inspired Amate Bark Paintings

We are getting ready for our annul Cinco De Mayo festival.  Students have been learning about Latin American culture and Mexican Folk Art.

Following Denise Logan's Amate Bark Painting lesson, 2nd grade students did a fantastic job creating their very own colorful Amate paintings.

Students first draw lightly on brown craft paper their Amate design. Next students outline all pencil lines with bright pastel - this helps them paint in the lines.  Then they paint all shapes using tinted tempera. Once paintings are dry, students outline design with pastel to find lost lines and details. Last carefully "baby rip" the edges of the brown paper.
