Complementary Color Monsters

Students were introduced to the idea of Complementary Colors. We started our lesson by watching and listening to this video of a song "Ballad of Red and Green." from Sesame Street.

They loved the song and giggled a lot. It is pretty silly, but it is a great video to show complementary colors. It's pretty catchy too.
After listening to the song, students listed the complementary colors. They were introduced to the concept that colors can work together to create contrast that allows a color to look lighter or darker when used with a complementary.

Students  followed an  easy directed drawing to create 4 monsters. After drawing, they had fun with watercolor to add complementary colors. This was a fun color lesson right before Halloween.

Watercolor Pumpkins

Fall is in the air and pumpkins are everywhere. It's that time of year again! 4th Grade are excited for fall and so why not celebrate it by learning how to draw and paint a big pumpkin that shows form and value.

Students looked at the pumpkin life cycle.
They talked about organic shapes and how pumpkins can be various sizes and forms.

They drew pumpkins using pencil and had a blast watercoloring them. Last students had the option to add patterns to their dry work using sharpie.

I love the curly vines on their pumpkins!

I think they turned out wonderful.

Happy Fall Y'all!
