Paper Mache Sculptures , 5th

5th Grade is busy making their armature for their paper mache sculptures. Students had several choices how to build their sculpture. After showing a quick demo how to make basic 3D forms out of news paper, they got straight to work.

Check out this Pineapple with a bow!

A cactus wearing a sombrero! I love their creativity.

They also had the choice to use cardboard, poster board, found objects like toilet paper rolls, cans, cups, empty containers to use while assembling the armature. We even used foil as part of their armature.
This elephant's trunk is foil, body is newspaper, legs are foil wrapped with paper, and ears are poster board.

I personally love using foil for this process because it is so easy for children to manipulate in to 3D forms. After creating the sculptures parts, students can  wrap the foil with tape or newspaper. It makes for great organic looking appendages.

Some students chose to draw 2 profiles of their animal on poster board or cardboard. Next they cut out the parts of the animal: head, legs, tail. After all parts were cut, students stuffed their parts to make them 3D. Some students used foil or cardboard. Cardboard was used to create cylinders for the bodies. Depending on animal, some students could use a toilet paper roll but most created their own cylinder. After a lot of tape and determination, they assembled their animal together.

Students learned that the  process all really depends on what animal was being created. The problem solving was pretty amazing to watch!

Check out this panther!

I can't wait to see what these will look like in their final process.

So much more to come. Cheers!

Sweet Lil' Llamas

Every Friday,  I teach 12 - 20 min classes. These classes go by super fast and are back to back.

I lovingly tease and call it my "Freaky Fridays."  It really is called Student Select Day.
Students get to go to 2 specials that day which is pretty awesome. Students love Fridays!

To make the most of this time,  I usually try to encourage students to do a 20 min Friday Challenge  by completing a composition or challenge in just 20 mins!

Today we did Llamas.  Tweaked but Inspired by a project from Art Projects For Kids.

Here is what my board looked like.

o0o0pps! Where is the n in Brown. I admit, I set up my board even more quickly on Fridays.

Here is some of their fabulous results:

Aren't these precious?! I am so impressed with my students. Not to shabby for 20 min masterpieces!
