Another Fun Friday Art Challenge, Wavy Whales. I knew I wanted to do something with Whales and something using line...so here we are making Wavy Whales.
Students used a template to draw a silhouette of a humpback whale. Once they had the shape down, they looked at a Humpback whale picture. They had to look at line, size, shape and of course placement. Then students could decide where to draw the rest of the lines, shapes, features, details on the whale.
I gave them a tip and said to start with the mouth. Where is the mouth placed, and what kind of line is it? We talk about how the line kind of looks like a hook or a line with a slow dip in it. Once students had the mouth drawn, they picked up very quickly where everything else was placed... the eye, the lines on the belly, and the dots on the back.
After drawing, they colored their whale with crayon and are encourage to overlap colors. The class talked about how the belly should remain white and to just leave it the color of the paper
Now for the Wavy lines!! Wavy lines of any type to create a Wavy Ocean. Then use big or small brushes to paint with liquid watercolor washes of various cold colors.
We had our washes in big cups with various brush sizes, and the students could pass the cups around and use which ever one they wanted.
I love that the students have their own styles and put their personalities into their work.
