Rizzi Birds Kindergarten

Kindergarten is learning about Pop artist,  James Rizz. They are learning about d how to draw in the style of Rizzi.

We started this lesson by reading a beautiful children's book Birds by Kevin Henkes. Then we watched a great short video about Pop Artist James Rizzi.

Students talked about the style of Rizzi's work. We discussed how his birds are often repeated through out his work.  Class discussed what Pop Art is and how it fits into culture. What a symbol is and the characteristics of Pop Art. How Rizzi's work uses bold lines and flat color.

After class discussion, students did a "Follow Me" Drawing of a Rizzi Style Bird. For Kinder, I find it best that when we draw that we do the steps together as a class. It often goes a little like this... "I do..." They Say "You Do" then clap and use their pointer fingers to point to their eyes (For Watching)...Then I will draw the step and say ..."You Do"...and they repeat.."We Do" and then they will do the step. I usually will show the students what not to do right before I do the correct step.

Usually by drawing tiny and say "Will I do this" and there will be lots of giggles and  "No0o0s.."
Or too BIG and say in a Big Voice "Will I do this"...."Noooo!" It is lots of fun.

After students drew their bird. They outlined all their lines with Sharpies.

First Step "Follow Me" Draw Along: Rizzi Bird

On Day 2 Students painted with Acrylic. I gave each class one color for their bird. Yellow for the beak and Sun and Green for the grass.  I think they are going to make a great display.
2nd Step: Paint Your Bird. Use Acrylic, Be Brave & Wear an Apron!

On Day 3:  Students used bleeding tissue to fill their background with Color. Students had a blast doing this step. The class sang chant along while placing their faux watercolor tissue down.."Place it Down, Color Down, Water Down, Overlap, Don't look back, Different Color, Overlap, Water Down"....My kindergarteners love to sing and chant while they work.
It usually helps keep them focused. Silly but it works!

Last Step: Bleeding Tissue
